Based on the 2006 book of the same name by Vikram Chandra, the streaming television series Sacred Games is an Indian neo-noir crime thriller. It was the first Netflix original series created in India, and it was helmed by Phantom Films' Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap. Varun Grover, Smita Singh, and Vasant Nath adapted the book. Motwane, Erik Barmack, and Kelly Luegenbiehl served as the show's executive producers.
Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan), a disturbed police officer who relies on sleeping drugs to get by, is locked at a lesser position as a "low-performing officer" because of his honesty. His world is turned upside down when he receives a mysterious call from the notorious underworld gangster Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who has been missing for more than 16 years.
Singh is urged by the criminal chief to save Mumbai, which will perish in 25 days. Throughout the journey, Sartaj receives assistance from Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte). The rest of the season alternates between flashbacks to Gaitonde's upbringing in poverty and his rise to the position of crime lord in the present.
The 2006 novel of the same name by Vikram Chandra served as the inspiration for Netflix's first Indian original, Sacred Games. It is also the only Indian television program to be listed among "The 30 Best International TV Shows of the Decade" by The New York Times.
